Poetic, phenomenological, and deeply psychological, Gareth Edwards’ contemporary seascape paintings set out to establish the profound relationship between art, nature, and the balance of traditional landscape and abstraction.
Edwards is a prominent member of the Newlyn School of Arts, a graduate of Goldsmiths College, an elected Royal West of England Academy (RWA) Academician, and a long-time resident of St Ives’ historic Porthmeor Studios. A space previously occupied by luminaries of British painting such as Patrick Heron and Ben Nicholson.
His established style is born from the use of oil, ash, minerals and pigments. Along with the deliberate distressing and rebuilding of the canvas, This powerful combination of materials and technique helps convey the sense of wonderment felt as we gaze across the ever-changing Cornish landscape.
"Contemporary Landscape painting has its detractors, but I believe it remains full of potential. My work considers the meaning and metaphor of natural forces, in the tradition of Constable and Turner, artists who recognise the power, beauty and grace of nature and our relationship with it" - Gareth Edwards
