THIS INTERVIEW OFFERS A CLOSE LOOK AT WOLFGANG BLOCH’S PAINTING PRACTICE, SHAPED BY DECADES OF SUSTAINED LOOKING, INTUITION, AND EMOTIONAL CLARITY. SPEAKING FROM THE STUDIO, BLOCH REFLECTS ON THE FEELING THAT CONTINUES TO DRIVE HIS WORK, THE BALANCE BETWEEN CONTROL AND INSTINCT, AND THE CONSTANCY THAT UNDERPINS HIS EVOLVING MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES. WHAT EMERGES IS A PRACTICE GROUNDED IN QUIET INTENSITY, WHERE PAINTING REMAINS BOTH A NECESSITY AND A SOURCE OF PEACE.
  • YOUR WORK HAS DEVELOPED OVER MANY DECADES. WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT NOW, WHAT FEELS CONSTANT, AND WHAT CONTINUES TO EVOLVE?

In my work, I believe I’m constantly trying to express the feeling I get when I stand at the edge of a cliff, staring at an empty ocean. It’s a feeling of being home. I started doing it at a very young age. It’s a feeling of peace, tranquility, and pure awe. My materials colors and technique have evolved throughout the years, but the search to express that feeling has stayed the same.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A WORK HAS REACHED ITS FINAL STATE AND IS READY TO LEAVE THE STUDIO?

It’s hard to describe that. It’s a feeling I get when I look at the painting. I usually put pieces away for a couple days when I think they are done, and then go back and look at them with fresh eyes. It doesn’t take long, just a few seconds and I’ll know if it needs work in certain areas or if it’s finished.

MUCH OF YOUR PRACTICE SITS BETWEEN CONTROL AND INTUITION. HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE THAT BALANCE IN YOUR PROCESS?

That’s a great question. I’m always letting my intuition lead me, but unfortunately the logical side of my brain sometimes takes over and I start over analyzing the piece and I have to pull myself back and let my intuition guide me. It’s a constant battle.

  • WHEN COLLECTORS RESPOND DEEPLY TO YOUR WORK, WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE THEY ARE RECOGNISING?

I think they connect and respond to all the feelings I’ve put into the work. My work is very emotional.

WHAT QUESTION, TENSION, OR CURIOSITY CONTINUES TO DRIVE YOUR STUDIO PRACTICE TODAY?

Painting, creating is my life. It’s like breathing. It gives me peace and purpose. I feel it every time I step into the studio.

YOU’VE WORKED CLOSELY WITH US AT THE GALLERY FOR A WHILE. WHAT DOES THAT RELATIONSHIP ALLOW YOU TO EXPLORE OR ACHIEVE THAT FEELS IMPORTANT TO YOU AS AN ARTIST?

I think the most important part as an artist is to try and stay true to what you do and that the gallery you work with, sees and respects that. Artists need to continue to evolve, it’s part of their process and the right gallery will allow that, celebrate it, and evolve alongside the artist. It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to create something that sold in the past. I’m constantly trying to avoid that.
