Marc Chagall, a Russian born painter, lithographer, etcher and designer. Chagall was born in Vitebsk and first found artistic instruction from local painter Penn, from this he spent 1907-1910 in St Petersburg studying at the Imperial School for the Protection of the Fine arts.

In 1910 he moved to Paris where he met fellow artists Apollinaire, Delaunay, Leger, Modigliani and Lhote and found himself influenced by the cubist art movement. Throughout his career, Chagall experimented many styles including cubism, supermatism and surrealism, encouraging him to purse his exploration into fantasy and abstract art. Rejecting them in succession, Chagall found himself staying true to more traditional approaches and committing his work to more figurative and narrative art.
