Gareth Edwards

Poetic, phenomenological, and deeply psychological, Gareth Edwards’ contemporary seascape paintings set out to establish the profound relationship between art, nature and the balance between traditional landscape and abstraction.

A graduate of Goldsmiths College, an elected Royal West of England Academy (RWA) Academician, and a long-time resident of St Ives’ historic Porthmeor Studios, Edwards began producing heavily abstracted works after the birth of his first child – a result of a longing to be closer to the basic mechanics of life”.

In 2000, Edwards relocated to Cornwall from London, where he still lives and works today exploring what he calls “the aesthetics of atmosphere”. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the UK, and he is a sessional tutor at the Newlyn School of Art and a prominent member of the Newlyn Society of Artists.

“Contemporary landscape painting has its detractors, but I believe it remains full of potential. My work considers the meaning and metaphor of natural forces in the tradition of Constable and Turner, artists who recognise the power, beauty and grace of nature and our relationship with it.” – Gareth Edwards
