Lauren Baker, born in Middlesbrough in 1982, currently lives and works in London. She is a multidisciplinary artist who exhibits internationally.
After travelling to the Amazon and experiencing spiritual ceremonies with Shamans she began to experiment with her art exploring the universe in its vastness. Her work, using tools such as meditation, examines human connection with metaphysics and the power of energy. Through her art she aims to interpret these unseen energies and her style is often built around either emitting or reflecting light.
Baker explores a range of materials, including neon, diamond dust and kinetic elements, to communicate her stellar ideas. She uses forms, textures and sculpture to express her thoughts and feelings in an abstract way addressing the vastness of the universe. A sense of mystery and emergence, of connecting with something beyond our world, pulsates throughout her work.
Baker is passionate about environmental issues and uses her art to create awareness about sustainability. She recently collaborated with BMW Culture X Frieze to launch public light art 'One Thought Changes Everything'. Baker is also an Ambassador for One Tree Planted, as well as Save Wild Tigers and has done many collaborations with Help Refugees. Lauren is on a mission to plant 8888 trees in the Amazon and her artwork has raised over 80k for charity. In 2017 Baker was commissioned by Croydon Council to create a 7.5 metre neon across a bridge and she has also created installations at the V&A, Tate Britain and Tate Modern and her work is held in collections around the world.
